AI Generates Visual Representation of Pink Floyd Song from Brain Activity Recordings


A recent breakthrough has been made in the field of artificial intelligence, where researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have successfully recreated a portion of Pink Floyd’s iconic song “Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1” using brain activity recordings. Led by Robert Knight, the team studied the brain signals of 29 epilepsy patients with implanted electrodes to gain insights into the brain’s perception of music.

Analyzing Brain Signals

The participants were asked to listen to the Pink Floyd song while their brain signals were recorded. By comparing the brain signals with the actual song, the researchers were able to identify specific electrodes that were strongly linked to pitch, melody, harmony, and rhythm. This discovery shed light on how different regions of the brain process musical elements.

Training an AI System

Using the information gathered from the brain recordings, the researchers trained an artificial intelligence system. They excluded a 15-second segment from the training data and used the trained AI system to predict this unseen segment based on the participants’ brain signals. The resulting AI-generated clip closely resembled the original, with a spectrogram similarity of 43%.

Insights into Music Perception

The study uncovered interesting findings about how the brain perceives music. For example, the researchers found that the superior temporal gyrus region of the brain is responsible for processing the guitar rhythm in the song. Additionally, they observed that signals from the right hemisphere of the brain are more crucial for music processing than those from the left hemisphere, aligning with previous research.

Implications for Speech Devices

This study deepens our understanding of how the brain perceives music and could potentially have practical applications. The insights gained from this research may contribute to the development of devices for individuals with speech difficulties, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or aphasia. By understanding how the brain represents the musical elements of speech, future devices could produce more natural and human-like speech, reducing robotic-sounding voices.

Potential Future Applications

While the use of brain implants in this study limits its non-clinical applications, other researchers have used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans to record brain signals and generate music using AI. This approach holds promise for composing music in the future, enabling AI to reconstruct imagined music rather than solely relying on external audio input.

As AI technology progresses in music generation, questions regarding copyright infringement and authorship may arise. The similarity between AI-generated reconstructions and original songs raises questions about ownership. It remains unclear whether the person recording the brain activity should be considered the author or if the AI program itself could be seen as the author. Additionally, the specific brain regions involved in music generation may play a role in determining ownership of the recreated music.


The success of using AI to generate music based on brain activity recordings is a remarkable achievement. This study highlights the potential applications and implications of this technology, from improving speech devices to potentially composing music based on our imagination. As research in this field progresses, further exploration of both the scientific and ethical aspects is necessary.
