The Origins of the Universe

However, Laura Mersini-Houghton, a cosmologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, believes she has found the answer. Born and raised in Albania under a communist dictatorship, Mersini-Houghton overcame adversity and forged a career in cosmology, ultimately tackling the origins of the universe and proposing an extraordinary idea.

A Quantum Wave Function

Mersini-Houghton’s groundbreaking idea suggests that in its earliest moments, the universe can be described as a quantum wave function, a mathematical representation of a multitude of possibilities. Rowan Hooper: Let’s start with your own story of growing up in Albania. To what extent has that shaped your thinking?

Laura Mersini-Houghton: It’s contributed a lot. I was lucky because I had the kind of parents who spotted early on that I was interested in exploring the world and understanding how things work. They encouraged my curiosity and provided opportunities for me to pursue my interests. This early exposure to the challenges of living under a dictatorship also made me appreciate the importance of freedom of thought and expression. It motivated me to seek answers to fundamental questions and to never take knowledge for granted.
