Introduction: Following the legalization of cannabis, there has been a significant increase in cases of cannabis poisoning. Children are especially at risk as they often consume the drug through cannabis-infused edibles. Although most cases are not life-threatening, excessive cannabis consumption can lead to various adverse effects such as difficulty walking and breathing, abnormal heart rhythms, comas, and seizures. Nausea and confusion are among the milder symptoms of cannabis poisoning.
Study Findings:
Researchers analyzed more than 30 studies from the US, Canada, and Thailand to investigate the connection between cannabis legalization and poisoning incidents. The studies focused on the legalization of medical and recreational cannabis. The results showed that in areas where marijuana legalization occurred, reported cases of cannabis poisoning significantly increased. Overall, the risk of cannabis poisoning more than doubled for people of all ages and quadrupled for children.
Impact on Children:
Edible cannabis products pose a particularly significant risk to children. A separate study published earlier this year reported a sharp rise in cases of edible cannabis poisoning in children under the age of six in the US. The number of cases in 2021 was 3054, compared to only 207 cases in 2017.
Expert Opinion: Nicholas Buckley from the University of Sydney in Australia commented that the increase in cannabis poisoning cases is not surprising, considering the increased accessibility of the drug. However, the extent of the increase is noteworthy. He also raised concerns about the packaging and marketing of cannabis products, which often resemble candy or food, appealing to children.
Prevention Measures:
To reduce the risk of cannabis poisoning, the researchers recommend several measures. Parents should educate themselves about the risks and symptoms of cannabis poisoning. Additionally, products should be stored securely, using child-proof packaging, and kept out of children’s reach.
