Exploring the Unknowns of Cannabis: Why Scientists are Concerned

The Science of Cannabis

As the use of marijuana and its compounds rises around the world, Science Spotlight explores the latest research on the medical potential of cannabis, how it is grown and its environmental impact, the way cannabis affects our bodies and minds, and what the marijuana of the future will look like.

The Yawning Gap in Understanding

Despite our long history with cannabis, there is still a lack of comprehensive knowledge about its effects on our health, the environment, and society as a whole. Research into cannabis only gained momentum in the late 1990s and early 2000s, initially focusing on its potential to alleviate nausea in patients with HIV and undergoing chemotherapy. However, the number of published studies on cannabis is significantly lower compared to other drugs like tobacco and alcohol.

According to Ryan Sultan, a researcher from Columbia University, the limited data on cannabis is due to strict government regulations that make it difficult to study the drug. Obtaining a special license from the Drug Enforcement Administration in the US and dealing with restrictions in countries like Canada have hindered cannabis research.

This lack of scientific evidence has become especially concerning as the availability and hype around cannabis products have outpaced our understanding of their effects. There is a lack of knowledge regarding appropriate dosages, long-term effects, and even the accurate composition of the products being consumed. Deciphering the contents of cannabis products has become challenging, making it difficult to provide accurate dosing recommendations.

The Need for Foundational Data

There are several fundamental aspects of cannabis that researchers have yet to fully comprehend. Understanding how the endocannabinoid system influences our health and the production and consumption patterns of cannabis products are crucial areas that require further exploration. Most of the studies currently relied upon for insights are conducted in controlled settings, while the products available to the public may vary significantly.

Ryan Sultan emphasizes the importance of gathering foundational data to inform a thoughtful and intelligent approach to cannabis use. Rather than conducting an ongoing natural experiment, it is necessary to gain a comprehensive understanding of cannabis in order to ensure its safe and effective usage.
